I have a love-hate relationship with assembling furniture. It always takes longer than you think it will. The instructions always seem to have 800 steps. And I get irritated enough to start lecturing the furniture at least once per piece. But I love the feeling when I finish putting it together and get to experience the finished product in all its glory. Knowing all of this, I tried to mentally prepare myself to assemble my new bookcases, but when the time came to put them together, it ended up being a much more frustrating afternoon than I expected.
Read MoreI’ve been thinking a lot about my single years lately. I’m not going to sugarcoat it for you. Those were some of the hardest years of my life. Don’t get me wrong, there were a lot of really great things about being single. And I have so many amazing, unforgettable memories from that season of my life. But there were also plenty of nights when I cried myself to sleep.
Read MoreIf we go through life without any sort of pushback, any sort of tension, storms, or struggles, our faith will not grow stronger. Rather, it will collapse under the pressure down the road because it hasn’t been conditioned to handle the hard parts of life. The difficult moments we face, the heartbreaking circumstances that come our way, those are the things that the Lord uses to mature us, to grow us, and to develop us so that we can learn to remain standing through it all.
Read MoreWhen I was reading my Bible yesterday, I spent some time studying a passage from Luke chapter 7. In this particular passage, Luke describes the time when John the Baptist sends messengers to ask Jesus if He is really the Messiah, or if they should be waiting for someone else. To be honest, I’ve skimmed through this passage a lot in the past. I know I’ve read it, but I’ve never really studied it, until yesterday. And as I dove deeper into this story, my heart started to break for John the Baptist in a way it never had before. His humanity became so evident to me in this story, and it encouraged me in one way and saddened me in another.
Read MoreA couple of years back, I went to watch a few of the girls I coached in basketball play in their district championship soccer game. While I was there, I was talking to one of my player’s moms, and we got into a conversation about basketball tryouts from the year before. As it turns out, this player, who we’ll call Grace*, almost didn’t try out for basketball that year. We had heard from over 20 girls that they were interested in playing basketball before tryouts, so Grace was hesitant to try out because she wasn’t sure she would make the team.
Read MoreI want you to take a second and think about how important of a role persistence plays in our lives. If you want something, it often takes persistence to obtain it. Very rarely do you get exactly what you want on the first try.
Read MoreWhile I was reading my devotional this morning, there was a particular paragraph that stuck out to me. The writer said, “I believe that many times people give up praying because they want instantaneous success and immediate answers. They start the process but don’t see it all the way through. But when you’re persistent to pray for what’s on your heart, know that God hears you and is constantly working behind the scenes to help—so don’t give up!”
Read MoreDuring my quiet time this morning, I was reading a devotion about the importance of continuing to pray, even when God seems silent. I’ve read a lot of devotions about this particular topic, but this one was different. This one contained a story that I can’t get out of my head, so I wanted to share it with you today.
Read MoreGod sees our potential. He knows what we’ve been through up until this point. He’s prepared us in ways we probably didn’t even realize or understand at the time. He’s walked with us every step of the way, leading us to what’s in front of us right now. And He has full confidence in knowing He’s prepared us to pursue His will for us, even when we lack confidence in ourselves.
