I was reading through Psalm 34 this morning, and verse 18 stuck out to me, not only because it is a very well-known and often quoted verse, but because of how it’s brought comfort to me in my past seasons of heartbreak.
Read MoreOne of the most underrated kinds of pain you can feel is the pain that comes from stubbing your toe inside your shoe. If this has never happened to you, congratulations. But if you have ever accidentally slid your toes into the end of your shoe, you know exactly what kind of pain I’m talking about.
Read MoreA few years ago, I was getting ready for work and decided to wear my favorite Old Navy black jeans. They were my favorite at the time not only because they were black and therefore flattering, but because they had an elastic waistband, which was extremely underrated at the time. When I put the jeans on, I noticed a little hole in the inseam of the inside of my pant leg. But it was a very tiny hole and it wasn’t super noticeable, so I wore the jeans to work anyway.
Read MoreA couple summers ago, I went to the doctor to get some antibiotics for a cuticle infection I had on my left hand (gross, I know). When I was sitting in the room with the doctor, she asked me if I was allergic to any medication, and I told her no, because, at that time, I had never had a negative reaction to any medicine I’d been given.

When I was sitting in the room with the doctor, she asked me if I was allergic to any medication, and I told her no, because at that time, I had never had a negative reaction to any medicine I’d been given. Read MoreWhy are we so quick to cover up our pain and our wounds instead of trying to uncover them so we can heal? Why do we feel this overwhelming pressure for everyone around us to think we have it all together and that we’re always “fine”? Would it be so bad if we chose to be vulnerable instead? Would it be a terrible idea if we exposed our wounds in order to get the counsel, the help, and the encouragement we need to get better? At first glance, that might seem like a really scary path to take. But if we’re going to heal from our hurts and progress from our pain, then we’re going to have open up.
Read MoreI would even venture to say we’ve all been guilty of trying to fix things on our own at one point or another. We think we can just suck it up and move on and everything will be fine. Or we think if we just ignore the pain, or ignore the person who caused the pain, the hurt will go away. Or we think, “God’s got so many more important things on His plate. I don’t want to bother Him with this.” But in reality, none of these tactics work. None of these methods of self-mending bring the kind of healing and restoration we’re looking for. Only the Lord can give us that.
Read MoreWhen tough times hit, it’s common to hear people say things like, “Just pull up your bootstraps and keep going,” or “Just let it go…you’re going to be fine.” And while I do think there is a time and a place for statements like that, I don’t think it’s wise to skip over the mourning and grieving stages of heartbreak. Suppressing your emotions for the sake of saying “I’m fine” isn’t healthy or helpful.
