10 Verses For When Your Heart Is Broken

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. – Psalm 34:18

I was reading through Psalm 34 this morning, and verse 18 stuck out to me, not only because it is a very well-known and often quoted verse, but because of how it’s brought comfort to me in my past seasons of heartbreak.

I often write dates in my Bible next to verses if they stand out to me on a particular day. That way, I can look back through my Bible at a later date and see how God used His Word to bring me comfort and reassurance during a specific season or situation in my life.

Next to Psalm 34:18 in my Bible are a couple of different dates, both of which mark seasons of my life where my heart was absolutely shattered. I was so broken, so hurt, so blindsided, and I had no idea how to make the pain stop. Broken hearts are often associated with shattered expectations, and that is a feeling I am all too familiar with. So it’s no surprise to me that there are multiple dates written next to this verse in my Bible, as I was desparately looking for some comfort and peace for my hurting heart during those seasons.

Thankfully, Psalm 34:18 is not the only time the Lord speaks about how He comforts us and helps us when our hearts are broken. Sure, this verse is a great place to start, but there is so much more to be found as you flip through the pages of Scripture looking for a remedy for your broken heart and shattered expectations.

If your heart is broken right now, if you’re disappointed, upset, or hurt, I’d encourage you to read the verses below. Then once you’re done reading them here, open up your Bible and write today’s date next to the one (or ones) that stand out to you the most. A few years from now, it will be an amazing thing to look back on this season and see how God came through for you as your heart was broken and how He brought healing and restoration when you needed it most.
