If the most successful companies and organizations see the importance of having a board of directors, what would it look like for us to recognize that same importance in our individual lives? I’ve been thinking a lot about this concept recently, especially as I wrote my new devotional, “For My Single Friend” because it was in my mid-twenties, right in the middle of my singleness journey, that I really started to take “building my board” seriously. I wouldn’t have called it that at the time, but that’s what I began to do. And that process has continued to grow and evolve even now that I’m just starting off my thirties.

Asking For Wisdom

I remember this one particular conversation I was having with Elaine. She had just finished giving me all sorts of great advice when I looked at her and asked, “Elaine, how did you get to be so wise?” I figured she’d come back with an answer about how all of her life experience had just naturally developed wisdom in her. And while I’m sure that’s part of it, that’s not the answer she gave me. No, instead, she looked at me with an encouraging smile on her face and said, “I asked God to give me wisdom.”

I don’t know about you, by my email inbox has seemed extra cluttered these days. Maybe it’s from all of the email lists I ended up on from my holiday shopping. Or maybe I’m proving to be an easy target for Instagram ads. Either way, it feels like I’m being flooded with emails that I don’t even want to read.

The Beauty Of Backroads

There are verses in the Bible you’ve read several, maybe even hundreds of times, right? There are verses or stories you’ve been taught since you were a little kid, and you can might even be able to quote several of them from memory. But as you grow up, physically and spiritually, and you come across these verses, you will start to notice something new about them. The words will hit home a little differently than they have in the past. You’ll see these passages in a new light because you’re reading them under different circumstances.

Scripture tells us that God’s Word is a lamp to our feet and light to our path (Psalm 119:105). His Word shows us where we’re standing and where we need to go. It tells you clearly if you’re headed in the right direction or if you’re wandering down a dark and dangerous path. It gives you wisdom. It gives you discernment. And it gives you hope like nothing and no one else can.
