The Goodness Of God

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! - Psalm 107:1

My all time favorite worship song is called “Goodness of God” by Jenn Johnson. I honestly can’t listen to the song without my eyes welling up with tears. The reason it’s my favorite song is because the lyrics are such an amazing reminder to remember God’s faithfulness throughout every season of my life.

Every time I hear the words of this song, I think about how God has been good to me - in the seasons of waiting, in the seasons of planting, in the seasons of harvest, in the seasons of drought - because even though many seasons of my life didn’t turn out the way I thought they would or didn’t happen when I thought they would, God has still been so, so good to me.

And if I had to guess, the same is true for you too. Maybe your life is turning out the way you’d hoped. Maybe you’ve had to walk through some really tough and painful seasons. Maybe you’re confused or frustrated or growing impatient. Maybe you’re wondering where God is in the midst of all that seems to be going wrong in your life. We all know what it’s like to struggle through those thoughts and feelings. But again, that’s why I love this song so much. We need ways to remind ourselves of God’s ever-present goodness, even when (and especially when) that goodness can be tough to put a finger on.

So, in case you’ve never heard the song before, or if you have and you need a refresher, I wanted to share the lyrics with you today. I would also encourage you to look the song up and listen to it wherever you get your music. And as you do, I hope you’ll pay close attention to the words, asking the Holy Spirit to allow them to really sink into your heart. Use this song as a reminder that God is faithful, that He is present, that He is always with us, and that He has been and will continue to be so, so good to us.

I love You, Lord
For Your mercy never fails me
All my days, I've been held in Your hands
From the moment that I wake up
Until I lay my head
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God

And all my life You have been faithful
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God

I love Your voice
You have led me through the fire
In the darkest night
You are close like no other
I've known You as a Father
I've known You as a Friend
And I have lived in the goodness of God (yeah)

And all my life You have been faithful (oh)
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God (yeah)

'Cause Your goodness is running after
It's running after me
Your goodness is running after
It's running after me
With my life laid down
I'm surrendered now
I give You everything
'Cause Your goodness is running after
It's running after me (oh-oh)

'Cause Your goodness is running after
It's running after me
Your goodness is running after
It's running after me
With my life laid down
I'm surrendered now
I give You everything
'Cause Your goodness is running after
It keeps running after me

And all my life You have been faithful
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I'm gonna sing of the goodness of God
(I'm gonna sing, I'm gonna sing)

'Cause all my life You have been faithful
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I'm gonna sing of the goodness of God
Oh, I'm gonna sing of the goodness of God
