Keep Pursuing Your Calling

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10)

Dear God,

A while back during church, I felt like You were telling me that I’m going to end up doing something with my life that I never expected. Something way out of left field. Then recently, I feel like whatever I end up doing is going to involve writing. I think that You have given me the ability and the gift to write for a reason, and I just really feel like You’re going to end up using that gift you gave me in a big way. Please just give me clarity and direction on all of this.

Love,
Kristen

I wrote this entry in my prayer journal on April 29, 2013. At that time, I was a sophomore in college, working as a marketing assistant at a plumbing company and tutoring high school math. But in between classes, work, and tutoring sessions, I had started to write. And I don’t mean just writing in my journal. I was starting to write devotionals. I was writing things that I thought could help people grow in their faith and understand God a little better. Little did I know that what I was doing in my spare time at that point would become my job seven years later.

I’ve known for a long time that I wanted to write. And for years I’ve been confident that God was leading me to be a writer, but for the longest time I had no idea how that was going to unfold practically. But even when I couldn’t see what was ahead, I didn’t stop writing. I didn’t let uncertainty stop me from doing what I was sure God was calling me to do. Even when the only people reading my writing were my parents, my grandparents, and my best friend, I didn’t stop.

I’m telling you this story because I want to encourage you if you feel like you’re pursuing God’s call on your life, but you’re not exactly sure where He’s taking you. Don’t let the uncertainty of what God has in store stop you from pursuing what He’s leading you to do.

If He’s given you a gift, use it! Whether that gift impacts a handful of people or a massive amount of people, the point is that you use it. If I’ve learned anything from being a writer and podcaster, it’s that you never know how your words can impact people. So don’t underestimate how God can use you. Don’t give up in the face of uncertainty. Keep chasing after your God-given dreams, and watch how God uses you and your gifts to further His Kingdom.
