Feeling Lonely

Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. The troubles of my heart have multiplied; free me from my anguish. - Psalm 25:16-17

I think we can all agree that loneliness is one of the worst feelings ever. Feeling isolated and alone under any set of circumstances isn’t easy. But it’s especially difficult when you’re walking through a tough season or you’re in the middle of a big transition.

Oftentimes when we’re struggling with loneliness, we reach out to other people to fill the void we’re feeling. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing to do, this shouldn’t be the first step we take.

Whenever we feel like we’re missing something, our first thought should be to go the Lord so that He can meet our needs. After all, He is the only one fully capable of meeting every single need we have, including the needs we’re not even aware of!

So if you’re struggling with loneliness today, I would encourage you to spend some time in prayer with your Heavenly Father and ask Him to remind you that He is always with you. Pray that He would give you the comfort and the peace you’re looking for. And remember that because of Him, you are never really alone.

To get you started, here are some verses you can spend time reading, memorizing, and meditating on when you’re feeling lonely. I’ve found these to be particularly helpful and encouraging when I’m feeling lonely, and my prayer is that they would be the same for you.

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. - Isaiah 41:10

Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. - Psalm 62:5-8

The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. - Deuteronomy 31:8
