When Everything Is Changing

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. - Joshua 1:9

Around this time last year, my world was absolutely rocked. It seemed like everything was changing at once. I had left my job at my church after working there for nearly four years. I was starting a brand new job, which was its own kind of exciting and terrifying. The guy I had been dating broke up with me seemingly out of nowhere. And I found out that I was going to have to move to a different apartment. Oh, and did I mention that this all happened in a span of 3 weeks?

A couple days ago, I was looking back through my journal entries from this season of my life, and I came across a quote I’d written down. It was from one of my all time favorite books, Remember God, by Annie F. Downs. The quote was short, but it packed a big punch. She said this:

“I guess if everything is about to change, you’d better trust the One who’s changing it.”

Talk about a mic drop. Annie hit the nail on the head, because so often when everything is changing and everything feels out of our control, the only sure thing we have is Jesus. There is so much comfort to be found in that promise, especially when we are getting pushed so far out of our comfort zone.

Even when we can’t see what’s up ahead, we can trust Him. Even when we feel alone, we can be certain that He’s with us. And even when life gets turned upside down, we can rest in the fact that He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who has faced a season full of change and uncertainty. I bet you’ve walked through change-filled times as well…you might even be walking through a season like that right now. If you are, my prayer is that you will trust the One who is constant even amidst all the change.

Ask the Lord to give you confident expectation of what’s to come as you walk into new circumstances and new experiences. Pray that He gives you peace when where you thought you’d be seems so far out of sight. And ask Him to give you hope as you look for the ways He’s going to work all of this change out for your good.
